Description

Sh2-313 (Abell 35) has been considered for some time to be an old, low surface brightness planetary nebula approximately 16 x 11’ in apparent size in the constellation of Hydra. Distance is estimated to be about 1,200 light years. It has a diameter of about 5.2 light years, making it one of the largest planetary nebula known. Together with its other unusual properties, this called into question its classification as a planetary nebula. The current consensus is that the nebula is actually a Stromgren sphere, ionized by a hot, unseen white dwarf companion which has recently evolved from the PN phase. The system produces a strong wind, probably from the fast, rotating subgiant which interacts with the inner zone of the emission nebula to produce the bow shock visible at the centre of the nebula.
